This interactive iPad training course was created to help MTR Crossrail staff get ready for the launch of the Elizabeth Line. My role focused on the art direction, character design and visual design of the experience, creating a bright, engaging interface that felt inviting to use on iPad while helping staff learn about new routes, stations, services and customer journeys. The course used a cast of animated characters and scenario-based storytelling to bring the content to life, making the training feel more like an engaging digital experience than a traditional staff briefing.
The course needed to communicate a large amount of practical information in a way that felt clear, memorable and appealing to busy staff using iPads. Working within an existing learning concept, my challenge was to create a visual world that could support branching scenarios, character-led storytelling and customer journey content while still feeling polished, friendly and easy to navigate.
To bring the experience to life, I used Adobe Character Animator to animate the characters and create expressive moments that added warmth, humour and personality throughout the course. To work efficiently across a large volume of screens and scenarios, I adapted and reworked stock illustration assets, combining them with custom character design, motion graphics and interface design to create a cohesive visual style. The result was a colourful, characterful training experience that looked great on iPad, felt enjoyable to explore, and helped encourage staff to engage with the content before the line opened. The characters were so well received that Crossrail later turned them into life-sized cardboard cut-outs for staff events and featured them in a full-page Metro newspaper advertisement. Watch a video here of my colleagues talking about it.
